Technology

I realize the irony in what I'm about to write and HOW I'm writing it. Technology can isolate us. It's odd to think in this world where we can find long lost friends with the click of a button, in a world where we can tell our whole world what we think, how we're doing, or what we ate for breakfast, that we are more lonely than ever.
Remember the good old days when people actually had people over to their house for dinner? Or friends went out together? Sure, some of that is growing up and getting busy with your own family, but I believe alot of it has to do with facebook. What is the point of taking the time to go and do something with someone, when all you have to do is look at their facebook sight and see what's new with them. You can "catch up" with 10 friends in the time it'd take for afternoon coffee with one "real life person".
I encountered this very problem recently when I went home and saw family. Quite a few times actually. Ten years ago our family would have been playing games, talking, going somewhere for an adventure. Yet I looked around and EVERY family member was on a computer or smartphone. We were FINALLY all together, but we weren't all together.
Don't get me wrong, I realize the great value of facebook and technology. I've come to a point in life though, where I desire real relationships because life gets hard. Nothing is quite as encouraging as a real life there for you friend. Take time to get to KNOW people, enjoy time together. In the end, there's friends and family.
